At the Retreat

I am spending a long weekend (Thurs – Sunday) at a writer’s retreat. It’s something my local writer’s group does every year. This year, there are seventeen of us here. We go to a small Christian based campground – for me, it’s a two hour drive – where we are put up in their hotel. It’s almost like any other small hotel – rooms with two double beds (or some that have single bunk beds), a private bath, generic dressers, etc. But there are no TVs, no phones, no radios – though we do have free WiFi. There is also no smoking or drinking allowed. Not an issue for me. 😉  Our meals are provided three times a day, buffet style – and they are good meals! Most of us opt to have a room to ourselves so if inspiration strikes us at three in the morning, we don’t have to worry about disturbing a roommate.

Yesterday was travel day. I drove with a local friend of mine and we arrived just before lunch. Got settled into our rooms. Around 1, the ten of us who had arrived headed down the road to a Chinese restaurant for a traditional lunch (the first meal served at the hotel is Thursday dinner). After dinner, it was back to the hotel and time to get to work.

I must admit to taking a short nap – something I rarely do – but between a migraine headache that woke me in the wee hours of the morning and the long drive, I was beat. Fortunately, it helped as I was then able to get to work. People continued to arrive throughout the day. Dinner (roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, peas & carrots, rolls, salad, cheesecake) was at 6. After that, I worked on my current story, getting 71 pages of edits done and new words added.

This morning, up early to work on new story. Great breakfast. Time to get to work.
